POWER OF BETA BLOCKADE

The cardioprotection granted by metoprolol is restricted to its administration prior to coronary reperfusion
This is an interesting study in pigs. The findings could be translated to cardiac surgery. How about IV esmolol prior to cross clamping ? Minimizing cardiac enzyme release after cardiac surgery is an important goal worth pursuing. Low levels of troponin release after surgery are associated with better outcomes.
