Mortality falls if consultants work blocks of days rather than single day rotas, survey finds | BMJ
This recent item of news in the BMJ rings a bell - many years ago, it was shown that outcomes in ITUs are better if consultant intensivists were on call for a block of days rather than changing every 24 hours - as regrettably still happens in many intensive cares.
This and the beneficial effect of seven day consultant working demonstrates the b******g obvious - multiple handovers kill and continuity saves lives. It's the old European Working Time Directive again - the elephant in the room that nobody dares mention. Call me old fashioned etc etc!!
